RIP Sarankan Srikandarajah

Campus in mourning
By Teoh El Sen December 02, 2008 Categories: News

"Fear and shock has gripped the mourning students of University of Nottingham Malaysia in Semenyih following the brutal and senseless slaying of Sri Lankan student Sarankan Srikandarajah, 21. Students are afraid to leave campus grounds or their homes after last Wednesday’s gang slashings that left three others injured.
"Business has dropped. Our hearts stop whenever fast cars zoom past," said a restaurant manager about the current situation in the usually bustling area.

Last Wednesday, a gang of parang-wielding men attacked four university stduents at a restaurant in the town. Sarankan died on Sunday at Kajang Hospital.
Students wore black ribbons on their arms and wrists yesterday in remembrance of Sarankan. He was a top student at the Faculty of Electrical & Electronics Engineering and was among 10 chosen to be sent to United Kingdom on a student exchange programme.

Some 500 students attended a memorial service and candlelight vigil for the "fun-loving and helpful" Sarankan yesterday. The university’s vice-president, Ian Pashby, said academic activities would be cancelled on Friday, which would be a day of mourning for Sarankan.

"We have seen and heard of so many break-ins, thefts and of students being held at knife-point. This was the worst case so far," said an officer from the university students’ association. Police patrols in the area, he added, have instead decreased.
"More than half the students live off campus, and are often victims of gangs in the area," he said, adding that the closest police station was 7km away.

Students, parents and residents in Semenyih are hoping that the authorities, including the university management, would boost security in the area.
Security guards at the campus have been ordered to be extra-vigilant and to check the identities of all who enter the campus.

The university’s director of Administrative Support Searvices, Paul Boardman, has advised students to stay away from bars in the area "until these criminals have been caught".

Sarankan died four days after the attack. University students have also accused the Kajang Hospital of not attending to the victims for five hours. The victims were later transfered to Assunta Hospital and Subang Jaya Medical Centre.
Some of Sarankan’s fingers were severed and his left hand was almost severed. He was also slashed in the leg, and he died from excessive bleeding.

The other victims of the attack are a 22-year-old student from India and a local man whose identity could not be confirmed. The former is still warded at the Assunta Hospital while the latter has been discharged from the Kajang Hospital.
A 22-year-old local student from the same university, who was hurt in another slashing incident that happened minutes after the first, has been given close to 50 stitches."

My brother, rest in peace eternally mate.
